The Beijing Art Museum houses artworks of various categories from the primitive society to the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is located in Wanshou Temple, a precious temple from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Wanshou Temple was built in 1577, the fifth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty. It was a special temple for the royal family. After several large-scale renovations by emperors Kangxi, Qianlong, and Guangxu, it has become a royal important temple integrating temples, temporary palaces, and gardens.
The buildings in the east, middle, and west roads are adjacent to each other, covering an area of 50 mu. It was once known as the ‘Little Forbidden City in western Beijing’. The Beijing Art Museum now collects nearly 50,000 ancient artworks of various types. The time span ranges from the primitive society to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The collection categories are extensive, mainly including calligraphy and paintings of all dynasties, stele rubbings and letters from celebrities, palace embroidery, palace porcelain, ancient furniture, coins and seals of all dynasties, etc. It also collects more than 100,000 ancient books from the Song Dynasty to the 20th century.
