The museum’s architectural design resembles a dynamic, large eye, with the ticket office located inside a locomotive, adding a distinctive touch. The basement of the museum serves as parking and luggage storage, and occasionally hosts temporary exhibitions. The visiting area consists of five floors above ground, which can be toured by walking through each level, taking approximately two hours. First Floor: The museum’s lobby is located on the first floor, along with temporary exhibition halls and multi-function rooms. In recent years, this area has been the site for Fengtai urban planning exhibitions, which are relatively simple and open to the public for free. However, a phone reservation is required three days in advance. To continue visiting the Auto Museum, a museum ticket must be purchased. Second Floor: On the second floor, there is an exhibition showcasing the development of China’s automotive industry, featuring many prototypes of Soviet-era vehicles such as the ZIM and Volga sedans. The exhibition is relatively simple, and the main function of this floor is to serve as a dining area and souvenir shop. The dining area is divided into a themed restaurant and a fast-food restaurant. The themed restaurant is decorated with unique road and car elements, offering Western cuisine in an elegant setting with an average cost of 30-50 yuan per person. The fast-food restaurant is simpler, with an average meal cost of about 20 yuan per person. The souvenir shop sells a variety of car models and other memorabilia, which interested visitors can explore and purchase. Third Floor: The third floor is dedicated to the prediction of future automobiles and their impact on human life. The future exhibition area displays many concept cars and models predicting the future of automotive development, which are quite distinctive. The impact on human life showcases the conveniences brought by automobiles but also the negative effects such as traffic congestion and pollution, along with the efforts made by humans to address these adverse impacts. This floor also features car movies, simulated driving, dancing cars (cars that can dance to music), and car model assembly games, making it an entertaining area for children. Fourth Floor: The fourth floor focuses on the engineering and technical aspects of automobiles, displaying the internal structures and production lines involved in car manufacturing, helping visitors gain a deeper understanding of automobiles. This floor also includes a car design simulation where visitors can design their own cars using a computer, and the computer will score the design, which is quite interesting. The fifth floor showcases the history of automobiles, starting from the earliest horse-drawn carriages and unicycles, to the famous指南车 and 击鼓车 in Chinese history, and extending to modern automobiles. It features unique early steam-powered vehicles from abroad, the earliest steam-powered vehicles from the Qing Dynasty in China, and early prototypes of cars like the Volkswagen Beetle, Ferrari, and Ford, making it an excellent place to learn about the history of automobiles.
