Beijing East Road was始建于 in 1849 and completed in 1876. At first, this road was named Consulate Road because there was a British consulate at its eastern end. It is commonly known as Hou Damalu. In 1865, it was officially named Beijing Road. In 1945, it was renamed Beijing East Road. The eastern section of Beijing East Road is mostly occupied by foreign firms and banks, such as Zhongshi Bank at No. 130, Zhejiang Industrial Bank at No. 230, Siming Bank at Nos. 232-240, China Reclamation Bank at Nos. 239-255, Zhongyi Trust Co., Ltd. at No. 270, Yanchang Bank at No. 280, Guohua Bank at No. 342, etc. The middle and western sections are mostly hardware, building materials, and electromechanical stores. Nowadays, many historical buildings have been left.
