Liyuan Theater, established in October 1990 through a collaboration between the Beijing Opera House and the Qianmen Hotel, is a teahouse-style theater. Visiting Liyuan Theater to watch Peking Opera is a must-experience in Beijing, akin to visiting the Forbidden City and tasting Peking duck. The theater is divided into three parts: a performance hall, an exhibition hall, and a sales hall.
The performance hall consists of a theater stage and an audience area. The stage stands 8 meters high, 12 meters wide, and 7 meters deep, adorned with couplets written by the dramatist Weng Ouhong and calligraphed by Liu Bingsen. The audience area is surrounded by eight large Peking Opera facial makeups and 14 painted screens depicting characters from Peking Opera, with three ticket sections accommodating 800 seats. In line with traditional opera house customs, visitors can enjoy various Beijing snacks and famous teas while watching the opera performances. The exhibition hall features displays on the 200-year development history of Peking Opera art. In the sales hall, visitors can purchase Peking Opera crafts and souvenirs, and even dress in theatrical costumes and have their faces painted for commemorative photos.
