The New Culture Movement Memorial Hall is a five-story brick-and-wood structure building with an I-shaped plan. It covers an area of 10,000 square meters. As the main body of the building is made of red bricks, it is known as the ‘Red Building’. It was originally part of the campus of Peking University. Later, it was changed into a student dormitory and then into the administrative office, library, and liberal arts classrooms of Peking University.
In April 2002, the Beijing New Culture Movement Memorial Hall officially opened. Cai Yuanpei, a modern educator, moved into the Red Building to work shortly after he became the president of Peking University in 1917. In January 1918, he hired Comrade Li Dazhao as the director of the Peking University library and a professor of the economics department. At this time, Mr. Lu Xun was also a professor in the Chinese department of Peking University. Chen Duxiu was also a professor at this school in 1916. At the same time, famous scholars such as Qian Xuantong, Liu Bannong, Yang Changji, Hu Shi, Ma Xulun, Ma Yinchu, and Li Siguang successively held positions and taught here. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday all year round, 09:00 – 16:00; closed all day on Monday all year round.
