The narrative begins with Bras Cubas, who has already met his demise, journeying through the river of time with a hippopotamus to the very beginning of his life. From this vantage point, he projects his life from its source. Bras is depicted as a self-important, arrogant man whose life is a chronicle of failures. He is a man who refuses to commit to anything or anyone, living a life that is a mere series of events, perhaps not unlike the lives of many of us.
The theatre troupe employs a **deconstructed narrative**, weaving together three parallel lines:
1. The deceased Bras Cubas serves as the narrator, recounting his memories.
2. The past Bras Cubas is the protagonist, reenacting his life.
3. The author Machado de Assis is the creator, commenting and interacting in real-time.
