The Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine was completed in September 1990 and is located in the Yifu Science Museum on the campus of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. It is a professional museum with rich collections and systematic contents. The museum is divided into two parts: the ‘Department of Medical History’ and the ‘Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine’, with an exhibition area of about 1,500 square meters. In 2004, with the completion of the digital museum of traditional Chinese medicine, more people can learn about traditional Chinese medicine culture and knowledge through the Internet.
The ‘Department of Medical History’ collects more than 1,000 pieces of medical cultural relics of past dynasties and 200 rare medical books. The ‘Exhibition Hall of Chinese Medical History’ takes Chinese culture as the background and the development history of Chinese medicine as the main line. Through medical cultural relics of various periods, it reproduces the main achievements of traditional Chinese medicine including ethnic minorities. The ‘Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine’ collects more than 2,800 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine specimens, about 5,000 copies. The exhibition includes two parts: the ‘Comprehensive Exhibition Hall of Traditional Chinese Medicine’ and the ‘Exhibition Window of Medicinal Animals’. The ‘Comprehensive Exhibition Hall of Traditional Chinese Medicine’ displays nearly 600 kinds of commonly used traditional Chinese medicines and more than 1,500 traditional Chinese medicine specimens. In addition, there are nearly 300 taxidermy specimens of medicinal animals and pickled specimens of medicinal plants and hundreds of color photos of medicinal plants. The museum also offers elective courses such as ‘Chinese Medicine and Cultural Relics’, ‘Medicinal Zoology’, and ‘Identification of Commonly Used Decocted Pieces of Traditional Chinese Medicine’ to the whole school. It also gives popular science lectures and uses the resources of the museum to serve the school and society in an all-round way. Opening hours: Open all year round, Tuesday to Saturday, 08:30 – 16:30. Must-see tips: 1. On International Museum Day (May 18) every year, it is open to the public free of charge all day. 2. This museum provides free guided tour services on Saturdays.
