The Sports Center of Beijing University of Science and Technology served as the venue for judo and taekwondo during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The exterior design of the stadium incorporates the concept of ‘belts’ from these martial arts, with rust-red metal plates 3 meters wide and spaced 0.75 meters apart evenly arranged across the entire facade, creating a harmonious architectural unity. From the Olympic Plaza in front of the stadium to the exterior walls and even inside, rows of neat lines convey the message of ‘belts’.
The roof structure of the Sports Center adopts a bolted spherical steel grid structure. When viewed from above, the roof resembles a ‘net’ composed of numerous rod elements, with spherical nodes connecting the rods. Small holes on the nodes allow for the insertion of bolts from the rods, which are then connected through these nodes to form the steel grid. During the Olympics, the Sports Center had a total of 8012 seats. After the games, it was partially renovated to return to 5050 standard seats, capable of hosting major competitions, school indoor sports events, teaching, training, fitness, meetings, and cultural performances. It also serves as a swimming teaching and training center and a venue for water sports and recreational activities. Opening hours are from 08:00 to 22:00 all year round, with different opening times for various facilities.
