Beijing Zoo is located on Xizhimen Outer Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, and is one of the largest urban zoos in China with a comprehensive variety of animals, having a history of over a century since the 32nd year of the Guangxu period. The zoo is divided into three areas: East, South, and North. It is home to precious and rare animals native to China, such as giant pandas, golden monkeys, Northeast tigers, white-lipped deer, milu deer, pony horses, and red-crowned cranes, as well as representative animals from around the world, including African chimpanzees, Australian kangaroos, American leopards, Mexican manatees, and European bison.
Additionally, there is an amphibian and reptile pavilion, which is a two-story building showcasing over 100 species of reptiles from around the world, including the bay crocodile, one of the world’s largest crocodiles. The current Peony Garden in Beijing Zoo covers an area of 1,500 square meters, located to the east of the current waterfowl island and to the west of Binfeng Hall. The garden is primarily built around the Peony Pavilion and the surrounding corridor. The peonies, which bloom from late April to early May each year, complement the corridor beautifully. In the height of summer, the pink lotus flowers and dark green lotus leaves in the lake next to the pavilion create a unique scenic spot within the garden. The Peony Garden currently has nearly 400 peony plants, with preliminary identifications showing a collection of peony varieties from both domestic and international sources, including 10 color series and 54 varieties, mainly consisting of Central Plains peonies and Jiangnan peonies. There is also a Science Popularization Hall within the zoo, specifically designed to conduct weekend animal classes for preschool children. Under the guidance of teachers, children can get up close and personal with small animals, listen to little stories about them, and through various activities such as games and crafts with their peers, learn about the wonders of animals. The zoo is open from November 1st to March 31st from 07:30 to 18:00, and from April 1st to October 31st from 07:30 to 19:00.
