Benxi Water Cave: A Majestic Underground River in Liaoning

The Benxi Water Cave is located in Benxi City, Liaoning Province, and is a large water-filled karst cave formed millions of years ago. It is the longest navigable underground river in the world that can be toured by boat. The entire scenic area consists of the water cave, a geological museum, Tiezha Mountain, and Miaohou Mountain, distributed along the Taizi River. Visitors primarily come to see the water cave and the museum.

Inside the water cave, there are both water and dry caves, featuring many stalactites of various shapes that require boating to explore. The entrance of the Benxi Water Cave faces south and is crescent-shaped, with the words ‘Benxi Water Cave’ written above it. Upon entering the cave, one arrives at the ‘Reception Hall,’ a vast space capable of accommodating thousands of people. To the right of the hall is a dry cave that stretches 300 meters, with uneven terrain and caves within caves.

Numerous stalactites can be seen on the cave’s ceiling and walls, forming various landscapes such as ancient wells, Longtan, and Baibuchi. At the end of the dry cave lies a deep, clear pool with cold, rising water vapor. Exiting the cave and returning to the hall, one finds the dock leading to the water cave on the hall’s front side. The water surface is vast enough to moor 40 tourist boats, and under the surrounding lights, it resembles a tranquil and unique harbor.

Visitors descend from the shore stones, pass through a long corridor, and board the boat from the dock to begin their tour of the water cave. Throughout the water cave, there are many landscapes formed by various stalactites. Along the riverbanks, one can see stalactites resembling a Treasure Lotus Lamp, a Sword Propping up the Sky, an Alligator Head, a Corn Tower, a Unicorn Rhino, Spring Bamboo Shoots, a Leaning Tower, an Elephant, and Snow-capped Mountains.

Particularly noteworthy are the Corn Tower, Jade Elephant, and Snow Mountain, which are so realistic that they could be mistaken for the real thing. In addition to the stalactite forests and picturesque stone pillars on both banks, the cave ceiling also boasts hanging stalactites that are very crystal-clear and full of charm, making the entire journey approximately 20 minutes long. After visiting the water cave, one can proceed to the nearby Benxi Geological Museum to learn about the main geological changes from the birth of the Earth to the present.

The museum also displays many precious samples of geological and prehistoric relics from the scenic area, offering high ornamental value. There is only one restaurant in the scenic area – the Shuidong Juxianlou Hotel, where meals are relatively expensive, so it is recommended that visitors bring their own food. The opening hours are from 08:30 to 16:30 all year round.
