Biefeng Ancient Temple is located on Biefeng Mountain in Xiangpu Village, Yixi Town, Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province. It faces the Han River and offers a panoramic view of Fengcheng. Surrounded by mountains. Biefeng Mountain was originally called Fengqi Mountain. In the Ming Dynasty, there was one of the eight scenic spots in Chaozhou, ‘Kapok on Fengqi Mountain’. In the late Qing Dynasty, Lin Dachuan recorded in ‘Records of the Han River’ that ‘Fengqi Mountain is also Biefeng Mountain. It is ten miles northeast of the city. With beautiful mountain scenery, it is a famous scenic spot near the city. Many scholars and literati visit it.’ There is a ‘Fengqi Tower’ on the mountain. Inside the temple, there is a couplet of a poem written by Qiu Changzuo: ‘As soon as you cross the bridge, you will feel that there is less worldly dust. Only when you arrive at the temple will you know that the days are longer.’ In the Song Dynasty, Chen Xi and, a successful candidate in the imperial examination in Chaozhou and the magistrate of Meizhou, wrote an inscription poem: ‘For thousands of years, there have been disputes about right and wrong. In the evening breeze, tall parasol trees and tall bamboos sway gently. If you want to know that there were phoenixes inhabiting in the ancient temple, now there are no swallows flying in pairs in the hall.’ It can be seen that the ‘ancient temple’ has a long history. Biefeng Ancient Temple has three sections: the front, middle and back. The front section is a gatehouse pavilion. The middle section is the ‘Yuantong Treasure Hall’, which enshrines Guanyin of the South China Sea. The back section is the ‘Great Buddha Hall’, which enshrines Sakyamuni Buddha. When visiting Biefeng Ancient Temple, you must pass through the temple path with nine peaks and eighteen turns. Along the way, there are buildings such as the ‘Jidu Memorial Archway’, ‘Guanyun Pavilion’, ‘Guanyin Pavilion’, ‘Compassion Pavilion’, ‘Tianhu Pavilion’, ‘Biefeng Pavilion’, and ‘Chanlu Pavilion’ for tourists and pilgrims to take a break and cool off.
