Caozhou Peony Garden is situated in Mudan District, Heze City, Shandong Province, adjacent to National Highway 220 and was established in 1982. It is currently one of the largest peony gardens in the world with a vast variety of peonies, showcasing the development achievements of Caozhou peonies from ancient times to the present. It serves as the central hub for peony appreciation, tourism, production, and scientific research in Caozhou.
The garden houses over one million peony plants with more than 800 varieties, interspersed with hundreds of other flowering plants such as Chinese herbaceous peony, green peach, summer lotus, autumn chrysanthemum, winter plum, monthly rose, and rose, all vying for beauty. From mid-April to early May each year, millions of peonies bloom in a riot of colors and forms, creating a spectacular display that attracts a steady stream of domestic and international tourists, forming a grand scene of ‘flowers as vast as the sea, and people like a tide’.
The garden has evolved from more than a dozen peony gardens of varying styles and sizes since the Ming and Qing dynasties, such as the Zhao’s Garden and Mulberry Fence Garden from the Qing Daoguang period, Mao’s Garden established in the Ming Dynasty, as well as the Iron Lira Fort Garden, Dachunjia Garden, and Military Gate Garden of that time.
