Capital Theatre

The Capital Theatre is a professional theatre affiliated with the Beijing People’s Art Theatre. It is also the first professional theatre built after the founding of New China mainly for staging drama performances. At the same time, it can be used for large-scale song and dance performances, drama shows and film screenings. In the 1950s and 1960s, the theatre was famous all over the world for staging the plays of Lao She, Cao Yu and Tian Han.


Its representative plays include ‘Rickshaw Boy’, ‘Teahouse’, ‘Thunderstorm’, ‘Sunrise’ and foreign plays such as ‘The Miser’, ‘Aesop’, ‘The Man with a Gun’, ‘In all deliberation, a wise man is bound to make mistakes’. The famous drama master Jiao Juyin once served as the chief director of the theatre and cultivated a large number of performing artists represented by Yu Shizhi. Since the 1980s, a large number of outstanding young actors have emerged.
