The Catholic Church of St. Theresa in Jiangbei City is located in the ‘Central Park’ of the Central Business District in Jiangbeizui, Chongqing. Originally situated at No. 13 Mitengzi in Jiangbei City, the church was established when Father Li Fangji purchased a civilian house (known as Bojitan) in the fifth year of the Xianfeng Emperor’s reign (1855). It was rebuilt in the seventh year of the Guangxu Emperor’s reign (1881). The current Jiangbei Church of St. Theresa was constructed following a directive issued by Bishop Shang Weishan (a French national who was consecrated as the Bishop of Chongqing on September 21, 1926) on October 24, 1927, calling for donations from the faithful, and was completed in 1928. In 2005, the Chongqing Municipal Government decided to redevelop the entire Jiangbei City, constructing the Jiangbeizui Central Business District. The Church of St. Theresa in Jiangbei was relocated and reconstructed in the Central Park of the Jiangbeizui Central Business District, preserving its original architectural style and scale. On May 10, 2008, the church was officially handed over to the Jiangbei District Catholic Patriotic Association. On October 1, 2008, the opening ceremony of the Church of St. Theresa in Jiangbei and the 111th anniversary of the ascension of St. Theresa were grandly held in the Jiangbeizui Central Business District. The ceremony was presided over by Bishop Ma Yinglin, the head and secretary-general of the Chinese Catholic Bishops’ Conference, with more than 1000 representatives from patriotic associations across the city participating in the consecration ceremony. After relocation, the church has become one of the iconic buildings in Chongqing and an important window for international exchange in the city (foreign-related church). The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
