The Changyu Wine Culture Museum is located in the center of Yantai, adjacent to the sea. It was built by Changyu Company in 1992. In 1892, Zhang Bishi, a wealthy businessman from Nanyang, invested in building Changyu Wine Company. As it is a domestic wine and has won awards internationally, it is a well-known brand and source of pride for Yantai. The current museum is built on the original site, imitating the appearance of Changyu Company a hundred years ago. It is divided into two parts: the wine culture square and the exhibition hall. The two floors above ground of the exhibition hall are exhibition areas where you can learn about Changyu wine. The underground is a century-old large wine cellar where you can taste wine. Entering the museum, you first see the open-air wine culture square. In the center of the square, there is a Dionysus sculpture fountain. Here, you mainly visit the old building components of Changyu Wine Company when it was first established in the Qing Dynasty. To the south is the old gate of Changyu. On the Chinese-Western-style arched old gate is the calligraphy of Weng Tonghe, the teacher of emperors Tongzhi and Guangxu. A little to the north is the boundary stone of the Bank of China. A little further north is a screen wall restored to its original appearance. To the west of the screen wall is the early vault. On the east side of the entrance of the exhibition hall, you can see the statue of Zhang Bishi, the founder of Changyu. On the first floor of the exhibition hall are pictures and texts, displays of winemaking equipment at that time, and statues of workers making wine. It mainly showcases the history and honors of Changyu wine. Entering the door is a comprehensive hall with relief sculptures. The relief sculptures depict important historical events and figures of Changyu. To the west is the history hall of Changyu before the founding of New China. There is also the modern hall for achievements after the founding of New China, the calligraphy and painting hall displaying calligraphy inscriptions and paintings from all walks of life, and the treasure hall storing the awards won by Changyu. The film and television hall in the northwest corner is used to play corporate promotional videos. Beside the modern hall, there is also a coin-operated automatic winemaking machine. By inserting a 5-yuan coin, you can get a small cup of fragrant and mellow brandy. The second floor of the exhibition hall mainly showcases the wine-making process and displays world-renowned wines and Changyu products. The production process includes grape varieties and soil, oak barrel production, cork production, etc. The product display includes the ice wine (wine made by pressing frozen grapes) exhibition area, etc. Going downstairs from the old-fashioned spiral staircase on the first floor of the exhibition hall, you will come to the large underground wine cellar built in 1894 and completed after 11 years. This is the essence of the museum. The wine cellar maintains a temperature of 12-18 degrees Celsius all year round. It is close to the sea and below sea level, but there has been no leakage so far, showing the exquisite architectural craftsmanship. There are eight arched tunnels in the cellar, lined with hundreds of various wine barrels. Among them, the three huge oak barrels in Tunnel No. 7, each 3 meters high and with a capacity of 15 tons, are particularly eye-catching and are called the ‘King Barrels’. They are of the same age as the cellar. The wine that Changyu won awards internationally in 1915 was once stored in the ‘King Barrels’. In Tunnel No. 8, you can see bottled wines produced by Changyu in various years.
At the winemaking workshop, you can pay to DIY your own wine. Inside the No. 5 cave of the large cellar is a bar where visitors can taste wine for free with their admission tickets. If you are not satisfied with the free samples, you can also pay to taste other wines. The Zhangyu Wine Culture Museum is located by the sea, with a coastal sightseeing route suitable for tourists.
