Chaoyin Cave is located in the Purple Bamboo Grove scenic area, opposite the Guanyin Courtyard that refuses to leave. Similar to Fanyin Cave on the east side of Putuo Mountain, Chaoyin Cave is also a landscape that requires you to listen with your ears. In comparison, Chaoyin Cave is much lower and even buried among the reefs and not easy to find, but its length and twists and turns are superior to those of Fanyin Cave.
From the Purple Bamboo Grove parking lot to the south, turn left towards the Purple Bamboo Grove Zen Monastery. After about 200 meters, you can reach Chaoyin Cave. Chaoyin Cave is half-submerged in the sea, about 10 meters deep. The three characters ‘Chaoyin Cave’ at the entrance are the handwriting of Emperor Kangxi. Watching the ebb and flow of the tide at Chaoyin Cave and looking out at the sea where the water and sky merge into one in the distance from the railing gives a feeling of sudden enlightenment. It is said that this is the place where the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests her spiritual presence. The Guanyin Courtyard that refuses to leave is the first temple in Putuo, which also adds a bit of mystery to Chaoyin Cave.
