Chaotianmen Square

Chaotianmen Square is located in the northeast of Yuzhong District, Chongqing City, at the top of Yuzhong Peninsula. Here, it is at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialing River. Standing in the square, you can have a panoramic view of the scenery of two rivers and three areas. At the front end of Chaotianmen Square, the green Jialing River water merges with the brownish-yellow Yangtze River water.

To the east is the magnificent Chongqing Grand Theatre in Jiangbei District. To the west is the brightly lit Nanbin Road in Nan’an District. The square is also a leisure place for local citizens. When the weather is good, many people fly kites here. Chaotianmen was originally a relatively large city gate in old Chongqing, known as ‘Ancient Yuxiong Pass’. It was the place where local officials in ancient Chongqing greeted the imperial edict.

In 1927, the city gate was demolished. Nowadays, the local government plans to make this place one of the symbols of ‘New Chongqing’, a region with international fashion. The wharf near Chaotianmen Square is the departure place for night tours of the two rivers. Opening hours: Open all day from January 1st to December 31st.
