The water of Chaoyin Waterfall pours down from mid-air with twists and turns. The sound of the waterfall’s cascading is like the surging tide, so it is praised as ‘Rockfall and Tide Sound’. In the dry season, the waterfall appears gentle and beautiful. In the wet season, it surges forward with great momentum and heroic spirit, and the sound is like the raging tide. Its source is Tianyi Spring on the north side of Jufeng, the top of Laoshan Mountain. The pool below the waterfall is crystal clear and as blue as indigo, known as ‘Indigo Vat Bay’. At the second fold of the waterfall, the waterfall rushes into a cave and then surges out and flows into Indigo Vat Bay. How deep is this cave? Legend has it that there is no bottom. The three characters ‘Chaoyin Waterfall’ on the left rock wall are written by Ye Gongchuo. On the west stone wall is engraved a poem by Gao Fenghan: ‘The mountain stream falls from the sky, surging with thousands of currents…’. On the east stone wall is engraved a poem by Huang Miaozi: ‘…Three sides of the green cliff are adorned with green trees, and thousands of mountain streams converge into a clear brook…’. Above is a small and exquisite ‘Waterfall Viewing Pavilion’. Standing there and enjoying this natural painting and experiencing the poems of famous people will make you even more delighted. Open all year round and all day long.
