Chaozhou Ancient City primarily refers to the Xiangqiao District in Chaozhou City, where numerous historical buildings are harmoniously integrated with the local lifestyle, making it a living ancient city. Wandering through the streets and alleys, ancient sites such as Guangji Gate and Kaiyuan Temple are breathtaking, while the endless Chaozhou special snacks and residences hidden in the depths of the alleys evoke a sense of warmth and familiarity.
When strolling within Chaozhou Ancient City, it is a must to visit the Kaiyuan Temple, which was first established during the Tang Dynasty. After several large-scale reconstructions throughout history, the temple still stands grand and magnificent, with a continuous stream of worshippers. The Guangji Gate city tower, with its solemn and majestic presence, is a three-story structure from which one can overlook the main landmarks of Chaozhou, such as the Hanjiang River and the Xiangzi Bridge.
Do not miss the ancient Han Wengong Temple, the rare Song Dynasty residential architecture of Xu Fu Ma Mansion, the epitome of Chaozhou wood carving in ‘Ji Lü Huang Gong Temple’, and the Hanbi Tower. Shops selling special souvenirs along the streets and delicious restaurants are abundant, and while strolling, do not forget to taste the famous Chaozhou Kung Fu tea. The city is open all year round, 24/7, and the Chaozhou Ancient City Wall Lantern Festival in 2022 was held from January 26th to March 12th, from 17:30 to 22:00.
