The ancient city wall of Chaozhou was already scaled during the Song Dynasty. In the early years of Zhihe, an earthen city was built again. During the Shaoxing period, it was further fortified with stone, and during the Shaoding and Duanping periods, it underwent several large-scale expansions and constructions, forming a complete layout of an outer enclosure with an inner city surrounded by a moat. Due to the changes of dynasties and the destruction of war, by the end of the Yuan and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, it was in ruins. In the Hongwu era (1379 AD), the city wall was fully reconstructed. According to historical records, the Chaozhou ancient city wall has undergone more than a dozen construction processes, large and small, from which one can also catch a glimpse of the splendid historical culture of Chaozhou. After the construction, the city wall was 25 feet high, 22 feet wide at the base, and 15 feet wide on the city side, with a circumference of 1763 feet. There were seven gates opened around the city: Shangshu, Zhumu, Guangji, Xiashui, Anding, Nan, and Bei. A moon city was built outside the city gates as a barrier, and on the city wall, there were 44 enemy towers, 67 watchtowers, and 2932 battlements, which were very majestic. With the changes of history, the south, west, and north walls of the city have been demolished due to the needs of urban construction. Now only the ancient city wall facing the Han River in the east remains, starting from Jinshan in the north to the Nanmen in the south, with a total length of 2132 meters, preserving four city gates: Shangshu Gate, Zhumu Gate, Guangji Gate, and Xiashui Gate, and a city tower has been built. The opening hours are subject to the actual opening status of the day.
