Cheung Po Tsai Cave

Hong Kong is home to several attractions related to Cheung Po Tsai, with Cheung Po Tsai Cave being particularly well-known. Cheung Po Tsai was a pirate during the Qing Dynasty, active in the South China Sea region. It is said that his fleet consisted of 600 vessels and 50,000 men, primarily targeting official and foreign merchant ships. He was celebrated for his Robin Hood-like actions of stealing from the rich to help the poor. Later, the Qing court managed to persuade Cheung Po Tsai to surrender and appointed him as a naval officer.

Cheung Po Tsai Cave is located on the southwest side of Cheung Chau Island in Hong Kong’s Outlying Islands. It has now become a tourist attraction on the island. Some believe that the cave is too narrow to hide treasures, suggesting that it was actually used as a hideout from Qing soldiers or to store gunpowder.

When venturing to explore Cheung Po Tsai Cave, it is practical to bring a flashlight, as the cave is dark, narrow, and uneven, so please be extra cautious. The cave is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
