Chikan Ancient Town, a renowned international tourist resort in Guangdong’s Qiaoxiang, is located in the central part of Kaiping City, Guangdong Province, along the banks of the Tan River. With a history of 370 years since its establishment, Chikan Ancient Town has been developed by the Guan and Situ clans residing on the eastern and western ends of the town, featuring over 600 shophouses. It was recognized as a famous historical and cultural town in China in 2007.
Over the centuries, under the benign competition between the Guan and Situ clans, the architectural style and civilian life of Chikan Ancient Town have integrated Chinese and Western elements, developing into a unique commercial hub in Lingnan due to its distinct overseas Chinese culture and family management system. With the evolution of time, the ancient town has experienced its rise and fall. To protect and utilize it comprehensively and to revive the overseas Chinese culture, the Kaiping Municipal Government, in collaboration with CITIC Industrial Fund and the Wuzhen team, has created a comprehensive leisure tourism resort that combines sightseeing, leisure vacation, business exhibition, cultural creativity, and ancient town experience, based on the historical shophouse districts as grand background resources.
The resort includes 8 boutique hotels, 4 themed hotels, 14 guesthouses with different characteristics, 13 restaurants, and 238 shops, 9 cultural exhibition points (provincial cultural protection units), and comprehensive supporting service facilities. Chikan Ancient Town, Qiaoxiang International Tourism Resort in Guangdong, will serve as a platform showcasing Lingnan culture, overseas Chinese culture, rural culture, and leisure culture, becoming a new cultural and tourism landmark with significant influence in Guangdong and across the country, a key project and model example for the cultural industry to empower rural revitalization in the province, and a new vehicle for spreading Chinese traditional culture.
