The China Martial Arts Museum is located within the campus of Shanghai University of Sport, and it is the world’s first museum to showcase the culture of martial arts comprehensively. Here, you can learn about martial arts culture, see a variety of weapons known as the ‘eighteen arms’, and various martial arts books. The museum also houses a collection of bronze weapons from the pre-Qin period, as well as stone carvings, wood carvings, plaques, medals, and other items related to martial arts from different periods.

The museum consists of two floors, with the first floor being the exhibition hall, displaying a range of weapons and the history of martial arts culture. The history hall is arranged chronologically, showcasing representatives of martial arts from different periods. The weapons hall displays many weapons, including various Qing Dynasty firearms and pre-Qin bronze weapons such as swords, knives, spears, axes, halberds, and geos, which give a strong sense of time travel. Among the many exhibits, a ‘General’s Composite Sword’ from the Warring States period is the treasure of the museum, with a sharp blade, a product of the Bronze Age. Matching the General’s Composite Sword is a highly realistic Sword of King Goujian of Yue, with a black diamond-shaped geometric pattern on the blade, equally sharp.

The basement level features various interactive projects and a 3D movie theater, where you can participate in virtual combat games, fight against Bruce Lee, dodge hidden weapons, listen to drum sounds, and test your skills. You can also watch a 3D short film about martial arts. After visiting the museum, you can also visit the adjacent former Shanghai Special Municipal Government Building, a historic and magnificent building, and a landmark within the university.
