China’s Vertical Datum Zero Point Scenic Area

Located in the Yinhai World on the eastern side of Qingdao’s Fushan Bay, the China Zero Point Scenic Area serves as the starting point for all elevation measurements in China, where the commonly encountered altitude data originates. Here, you can gain insights into marine, land, and mountain scientific knowledge and experience the wonderful sensation of ‘height starting from your feet’. The six-meter-tall Vertical Datum Zero Point marker, a copper sculpture, stands as the symbol of the scenic area. This copper sculpture resembles a large plumb bob, with the tip pointing to the ‘People’s Republic of China Vertical Datum Zero Point’ determined by experts. Below the sculpture is an observation well, at the bottom of which lies a massive red agate sphere. The top surface of this sphere marks the elevation of 0 meters in China, from which the altitudes of all major mountains in the country are measured. Adjacent to the copper statue of the zero point marker, there are also zero point marker signs and bilingual explanations in Chinese and English. You can also view the World Datum Zero Point Window (a photo exhibition) and stroll through a science popularization gallery featuring marine hydrology knowledge such as oceans, tides, sea level, datum zero, and elevation, to understand various scientific knowledge related to the datum zero point. In addition, the area is home to the world’s tallest ‘Mazu Goddess of the Sea’ sculpture, the world’s first mechanically retractable sea rainbow bridge, the Sailing Capital Observation Tower, and the Maritime Science and Technology Museum. You can also witness the yachts docked at the Yinhai Yacht Club, creating a scenic view. The rainbow bridge, suspended above the sea, is a popular attraction where you can walk and take beautiful photos. Sailing is a new concept of life! Close your eyes and imagine, under the brilliant sunlight, led by a professional captain, with a group of companions, a boat, hoisting the sails, gradually moving away from the noisy land, the wind comes, the sails are full, the boat slightly tilts, the sea breeze brushes across your face, leaving a slightly salty taste on your lips, sitting on the deck, wearing sunglasses, looking at the distant place where the sea and sky meet, feeling this tranquility.
