The Chinese Character Museum is located at the northern end of the central axis of the administrative east district in Anyang City, integrating functions of cultural relic protection, display, and scientific research. It is a museum themed around characters, with an architectural style that exudes both modern fashion and the charm of the Shang Dynasty palaces. The complex consists of the Character Square, the main building, the Cangjie Pavilion, the Science Popularization Hall, the Research Center, and the Exchange Center, housing a collection of 4,123 cultural relics, including oracle bone script, bronze inscriptions, bamboo slips, silk manuscripts, and minority scripts.
The museum spans four floors above ground and one underground, with a towering Character Square at its entrance. The Character Square stands at 18.8 meters tall and 10 meters wide, taking the shape of the character for ‘word’ from oracle bone and bronze inscriptions. On either side of the main entrance, there are two golden mythical birds with exaggerated and unique shapes. The main hall features a relief-adorned golden roof, reflecting the characteristics of the Shang Dynasty palace architecture known as ‘sì ā chóng wū’. The path leading to the main hall is flanked by a forest of steles composed of 28 representative bronze oracle bone pieces, symbolizing two representative elements of the Shang Dynasty – oracle bone script and bronze ware. The Chinese Character Museum, set against the backdrop of world scripts, takes Chinese characters as the main body and minority scripts as an important component, presenting to the world the continuous lineage of Chinese characters and the splendid civilization of the Chinese nation with detailed materials. Opening hours are from 09:00 to 17:00 all year round.
