Ancient literati navigated between officialdom and seclusion, sometimes serving the imperial court, other times retreating into the mountains, gaining fame for transcending the world or engaging in worldly affairs, each forging a unique artistic path. This exhibition carefully selects pieces from the Xubai Zhai collection, starting from the perspective of life planning, to showcase the legacy of scholars who balanced official and reclusive lives, court painters, and renowned Confucian and Buddhist figures. It elaborates on the distinct calligraphic and painting styles of these ‘ancient literati’ based on their life trajectories and personal experiences, and discusses how the choices and historical situations of the贰臣and the remnant population during times of dynastic change influenced their artistic pursuits. The exhibition is open from October 18th to March 5th, with performance times and durations subject to the venue’s schedule.
