Introduction to the Chishan Scenic Spot ‘There are wonders in mountains and seas, Chishan in Weihai’. Chishan Scenic Area is located by the Weihai Stone Island Bay, named ‘Chishan’ for its main peak, which at 369 meters above sea level turns red under the sun’s rays. The scenic area covers 12.8 square kilometers and is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a provincial scenic spot. With over 95% forest coverage and a high concentration of negative oxygen ions, exceeding 60,000 per cubic centimeter, it is a natural forest oxygen bar and a key construction base for forest health preservation. Shrouded in clouds and mist, the scenery is magnificent, and there is an ancient saying ‘Divine beings return to Chishan’, adding a touch of mystery to this eastern divine mountain by the sea. The main deity worshipped at Chishan is the Chishan Ming Shen. It is said that Chishan Ming Shen originates from the Red Gate Cave of Chishan and is an incarnation of the Sun God, worshipped by ancient people in the ancient times as the ‘Ri Hua Jun’. He protects the mountains and sea, with boundless power, ensuring the coastal fishermen return safely with abundant catches. For thousands of years, the people here have lived peacefully and prosperously under the protection of Chishan Ming Shen, and thus his divine powers and merits are highly revered. The people regard the sea guardian Chishan Ming Shen as the God of Peace. In 824 AD, a Silla person, Zhang Bao Gao, built the Chishan Fahua Temple here. Later, the Japanese monk Ennin visited Chishan three times and resided at the Fahua Temple for two years and nine months. Chishan became famous in the Tang Dynasty due to Ennin’s ‘Record of Pilgrimage to the Tang Dynasty for the Law’, which tells of Chishan Ming Shen’s protection on his journey back to his country from Chishan Port (today’s Stone Island Bay). Ennin’s disciples later built the Chishan Zen Temple to worship Chishan Ming Shen according to his last wishes. Zhang Bao Gao also built two Chishan temples in Silla to worship the deity, in gratitude for the protection that made him a sea trade king and national hero. Since then, Chishan Ming Shen has been worshipped by the Tang Dynasty and countries such as Japan, Silla, Persia, and the Arab Empire. The existence of the Fahua Temple has also connected a ‘thousand-year-old temple connecting three countries’. Chishan is known for its ‘Eastern Divine Mountain’, ‘Buddhist Holy Land’, ‘Island Folk Customs’, and ‘Forest Park’. The main attractions include the thousand-year-old temple connecting the emotions of China, South Korea, and Japan – Chishan Fahua Temple, the large dynamic music fountain square themed on auspicious peace – Auspicious Peace Valley, the 58.8-meter-tall God of Peace – Chishan Ming Shen, the Zhang Bao Gao Biography Museum that tells the legendary life of the Korean sea king Zhang Bao Gao, the Chishan Zen Temple that records the experiences of the Japanese monk Ennin’s quest for the law in the Tang Dynasty, the Rongcheng Folk Museum which is a museum of northern Chinese folk culture, the Chishan Intangible Cultural Heritage Maker Center which is an intangible cultural heritage experience site, the famous water and stone culture museum – Shi Lian Ya Stone Museum, the pure land of Guanyin Bodhisattva – Guanyin Altar, and the ‘Dragon and Phoenix Jade Origin’ jade carving museum that interprets the tragic love story between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Yang Guifei, as well as many other attractions such as the Fahua Pagoda, Dragon and Phoenix Lake, Hundred Flower Garden, and the Great Ming Holy Land. It is a paradise for coastal style tours, mountain and sea landscape tours, fishing folk tours, and religious pilgrimage tours.
