Beihu Lake on Chongming Island is located on the north side of the central part of Chongming. It is about 12 kilometers long from east to west and about 0.5 – 1 kilometer wide from south to north. The water area of Beihu Lake is nearly 12,000 mu, roughly equivalent to two West Lakes. It is a super-large artificial lake and the second largest lake in Shanghai. It is also the largest semi-saline lake in East China. The predecessor of Beihu Lake was part of the Yangtze River. It was a long and narrow channel between Chongming Island and Xinlongsha.
