Chongming Temple, originally known as the Confucian Temple of Licheng County, was first established during the Ming Dynasty. In 1937, in response to the call of the ‘Buddhist Revival Movement’, Buddhist figures in Jinan established the Chongshi Buddhist Society in the eastern half of the Confucian Temple. After decades of changes and renovations, it was reopened to the public after being renamed ‘Chongming Temple’ post-2010.

Chongming Temple faces south and consists of a two-story structure. To the east of the temple’s gate tower is the bell tower, while the drum tower is on the west. Within the front hall of the temple, images of Maitreya Buddha, Jialan Bodhisattva, Wei Tuo Bodhisattva, Wenchang Dijun, and the Four Heavenly Kings are enshrined. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are resplendent and lifelike, with their golden bodies shining brightly. Passing through the courtyard, one arrives at the Mahavira Hall. The Mahavira Hall houses the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, with Buddhist scriptures painted on the walls. The entire hall is grand and magnificent. North of the Mahavira Hall is the Chanting Hall. Monks and lay Buddhists often recite scriptures, worship Buddha, and practice meditation in the Chanting Hall.
