Tongyuanmen Ancient City Wall Site Park is composed of a square, city walls, and sculptures. The sculptures narrate the historical stories of the ancient city walls’ construction, defense, and siege, complemented by two folk sculptures, ‘Fried Rice Candy Boiled Water’ and ‘Pole Chair’, which exude a strong local flavor. It is one of the places where visitors can experience the historical culture of Chongqing.

The ancient city of Chongqing had a total of seventeen gates, nine open and eight closed, built to symbolize the ‘Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams’ and to signify ‘an impregnable fortress’. Tongyuanmen, located on the west side, was the only land gate of Chongqing city and the starting point for land routes to other places, hence the name ‘Tongyuan’. To this day, Tongyuanmen is one of the only two remaining gates in Chongqing, and the Tongyuanmen section of the city wall is also the only relatively well-preserved ancient city wall site in Chongqing. The site is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
