The Chongqing Bayu Folk Custom Museum is a folk custom museum under the jurisdiction of the Cultural Radio and Television Press and Publication Bureau of Yubei District, Chongqing. The museum’s exhibitions are primarily divided into two main themes: The first is the Qing Dynasty Wood Carving Exhibition, showcasing intricately carved furniture from the Qing Dynasty, including elaborately decorated beds, ancestral shrines, and other folk artifacts. Among them, the Fully Gold Carved Ancestral Shrine and the Six-Pillar Five-Eave Fully Gold Carved Bed are the museum’s prized possessions, earning high praise from both domestic and international visitors.
The second theme is the Life Rituals of Bayu Folk Customs, which uses 100 lifelike statues to recreate the entire process of a Bayu wedding ceremony, filled with the charm of daily life. The museum, with its distinctive Bayu folk customs, displays over a thousand pieces of folk handicrafts, clothing, and other daily necessities from the Qing Dynasty and other periods. Additionally, Jiang Fengming, listed as one of the ‘Top Ten Bayu Folk Artists,’ has carved over 200 wooden figures based on the stories of ‘Water Margin’ and ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms,’ which are particularly attractive to tourists. One of the museum’s highlights is the 40-plus late Qing Dynasty Six-Pillar Five-Eave Fully Gold Carved Beds, which are representative of its rich content and exquisite carving skills.

The carvings are rich and varied, with superb craftsmanship and diverse techniques, ranging from hollow-out to relief carving. The hollow-out carvings are layered up to five times, a testament to the exquisiteness of the carving skills. Relief carvings vary in depth, with deep relief providing a strong sense of three-dimensionality, while shallow relief is clear at a glance. Some carvings are bold and unrestrained, while others are meticulously detailed, and their beauty can only be truly appreciated in person. Another treasure of the museum is the Gold Wood Carved Ancestral Shrine, which is rare in its grandeur and the substantial use of gold.

The museum is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00; closed all day on Mondays; and during National Day, it is open from 09:00-18:30, closed on Mondays (except for legal holidays).
