The Chongqing Natural History Museum is a municipal cultural institution under the supervision of the Chongqing Municipal Cultural Affairs Committee. It undertakes the responsibilities of collecting, displaying natural specimens, conducting scientific research and popularizing science on behalf of the country. Our museum has been successively named as ‘National Science Popularization Education Base’, ‘Popular Science Education Base of Paleontological Society of China’, and ‘Land and Resources Science Popularization Base’.

In May 2006, the ‘Former Site of Western China Academy’ (Beibei Exhibition Hall of Chongqing Natural History Museum) was approved and announced as a national key cultural relics protection unit. The new museum of Chongqing Natural History Museum is located at the foot of Jinyun Mountain in Beibei, Chongqing, covering an area of 216 mu, with a building area of 30,842 square meters and a display area of 16,252 square meters.

The architectural design concept of the new museum comes from the natural phenomenon ‘root-wrapped stone’. The root of the city tree of Chongqing, ‘Ficus virens’, is intertwined and takes root in the rocks of Bayu land, reflecting the exuberant vitality of nature and a kind of natural beauty. The cultural, extensible and inclusive nature contained in ‘root-wrapped stone’ can have good interaction with the building, representing the environmental protection concept of green ecology.

The basic exhibitions of the new museum are composed of six exhibitions: ‘Animal Planet’, ‘Dinosaur World’, ‘Landscape City’, ‘Mysteries of the Earth’, ‘Torrents of Life’, and ‘Ecological Homeland’. They mainly display the evolution of the earth, the evolution of life, biodiversity and the magnificent mountains and rivers of Chongqing, and focus on expounding the relationship between natural resources, environment and human activities, advocating the harmonious coexistence between man and nature and the concept of sustainable development.

In addition, our museum will also rationally plan the outdoor space in the future. With the theme of ‘experiencing nature, learning nature, and discovering nature’, corresponding outdoor exhibits will be set up to form the project characteristic of ‘combining museum and garden and integrating into nature’.
