Gongtan Ancient Town is located on the banks of the Wu River, originating from the rapids and prospering from salt, with a history of more than 1800 years. It is a national historical and cultural town and is acclaimed as one of the ‘Top Ten Ancient Villages and Towns in China’. The stilted buildings built along the river are hailed as ‘notes on the cliff’, with the Wu River’s hundred-mile gallery at your fingertips, and across the river, you can see the towering cliffs, a masterpiece of nature.
Traveling upstream along the Wu River from Gongtan Ancient Town, through Tutuozi Gorge and Baijigorge, to Lizhi Gorge, represents the essence of the Wu River’s hundred-mile gallery. The Qing Dynasty poet Mei Ruoweng praised it with the verse ‘The extraordinary landscapes of Shu, this should be the first.’ The ancient town is not large, and you can stroll through it in two or three hours. When tired from wandering, one can visit the old street, where many local delicacies of the ancient town are concentrated, such as fragrant mushroom balls, stir-fried smoked meat with mountain ferns, pig’s trotter with wind radish, cold tofu, tofu pudding, and other local cuisines. The ancient town also has several inns, and if you enjoy the leisure of the ancient town, staying for a few days is also a good choice.
