Chongwenmen Church, part of the Beijing Christian Church, was originally established in 1870. Initially, the church’s appearance was similar to its current form, but it was smaller in scale, only able to accommodate four to five hundred people for gatherings. With the continuous increase in the number of churchgoers, the Methodist Church reconstructed the church on the same site in 1880, and the new church was completed in 1882.

During the Boxer Rebellion in the summer of 1900, the church was burned down, and in 1902, the Qing government funded the reconstruction of the Asbury Church, which was completed in the spring of 1904. This is the sanctuary we see today. In the summer of 1958, as various churches in Beijing implemented joint worship, the Asbury Church suspended its activities. During the Cultural Revolution, the church’s equipment was severely damaged and became unrecognizable.

In the spring of 1982, the Beijing municipal government implemented religious policies, and with the assistance of relevant departments, after extensive negotiations and a payment of 20,000 yuan to No. 125 Middle School, the church underwent major renovations and was officially renamed Chongwenmen Church of Beijing Christian Church, resuming worship activities on Christmas Day of that year.

Chongwenmen Church features a distinctive architectural style. The entire church covers an area of 8,246 square meters, divided into a main and a secondary hall. The main hall has over four hundred seats, while the secondary hall has over three hundred seats, separated by a movable partition that can be raised or lowered, allowing for separate or combined use. The worship hall is circular and features a unique double-layered wooden umbrella structure, making its architectural style very distinctive.

Opening Hours: The church is open to the public every Sunday from 09:00 to 12:00. To visit the exterior, prior appointment is required; the specific business status is subject to the day’s opening conditions.
