Mother’s Church is located in Jiguanshi Town, Nan’an District. It is surrounded by mountains. It backs on Cross Baoshan Mountain and commands thousands of acres of fertile fields. In the mountains, the forests are deep and the leaves are luxuriant, and the fragrance of pine resin fills the nose. During the day, one can enjoy the view of clouds and fog covering it. At night, one can hear the undulating sound of the pine waves.
It is close to Mother’s Mountain Hot Spring, where one can enjoy the pleasure similar to Huaqing Pool. From afar, one can overlook the Yangtze River in Chongqing and have pensive thoughts about the past. The historical origin of the church, its superior geographical location, unique architectural style and strong religious atmosphere attract a large number of tourists. During the Cultural Revolution, some houses were occupied by farmers, and the houses on the left were burned down. Later, the real estate management department of Chongqing handed it over to Chongqing Ferry Technical School. In 1990, with the approval of the Nan’an District People’s Government, religious activities at Mother’s Church were resumed. The parish built a resting place behind the original seminary for the storage of ashes of deceased believers. The renovated Virgin Pavilion also welcomes many believers who come here to worship. After 1998, every year in the month of the Virgin Mary (May), the parish organizes believers to come here on a pilgrimage. In 2003, the Catholic Diocese of Chongqing officially named the original Mother’s Mountain Seminary as ‘Mother’s Church’ and enshrined the Virgin Mary as the patron saint of this church. The buildings and ancillary facilities of Mother’s Church in Nan’an Catholic District: The Peide Intermediate Seminary building faces north from the south. The total construction area is about 3,420 square meters, with more than 80 rooms. It is in Romanesque architectural style. The whole courtyard, including houses, playgrounds, activity rooms, gardens, etc., covers an area of about 80 mu. The small mountain range behind the seminary is about 500 mu and originally belonged to Catholic property. The Zhenyuan Church (formerly the Catholic Eastern Sichuan Diocese) behind the seminary is the property of the seminary. The church is the center of the entire building and is the place for preaching, giving lectures and holding Mass. On the right side, following the winding path, one can reach the Virgin Pavilion. Behind the Virgin Pavilion of the seminary, there were originally mallet-shaped trees introduced from the United States. The tree trunks are smooth and the leaves grow on the top. There were originally 10 cowpea trees introduced from France beside the playground. Their fruits are shaped like cowpeas. There are currently 6 date trees from Iraq, more than 3 zhang high. They are known as the treasures of Mother’s Church and are the only rare tree species remaining in Chongqing.
