Ciqing Temple: A Historic Buddhist Complex in Shenyang, Liaoning

Ciqing Temple, also known as Sanqingguan, is situated atop the northern peak of Longshou Mountain in Tieling, Liaoning Province. The temple complex features a traditional quadrangle layout, comprising the main hall, eastern and western side halls, a scripture repository, and the Zuiweng Tower. In front of the complex, there are two pavilions named Banqiang and Suyun, each housing a stele.
The main hall spans three bays in width and two in depth, with a covered porch beneath the eaves and bright-colored paintings on the horizontal beams. Inside, it houses three Buddha statues including Sakyamuni, accompanied by eight Arhat clay sculptures. Originally the mountain gate, the Zuiweng Tower was rebuilt in 1921 as a two-story wooden building with a hard mountain roof. The ground floor serves as the passage to the temple, while the second floor, once a gathering place for literati to enjoy tea and compose poetry, is now a VIP rest area, housing numerous calligraphic works and paintings inscribed by celebrities about Longshou Mountain.

The Xiufeng Temple Pagoda, located a hundred meters south of Ciqing Temple, is an octagonal, nine-story, solid, multi-eave brick pagoda, also constructed during the Hongzhi era of the Ming Dynasty and renovated in 1591. The pagoda features brick carvings of Buddha statues and niches. To the north of the Xiufeng Temple Pagoda stands the Taoran Pavilion, while to the south is the DiCui Pavilion, and south of the DiCui Pavilion is the Kuixing Tower. To the east of the pagoda, there is a small stone pavilion with a stele inscribed with the history of the ancient pagoda’s renovation.

Ciqing Temple was designated as a cultural heritage site in Liaoning Province in 1988. The opening hours and business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
