Cuijiao Ancient Dwelling

The entire building covers an area of 14,000 square meters, and the housing area is 5,000 square meters. It not only has the grandeur and domineering of royal palace architecture but also combines the exquisite craftsmanship of Jiangnan folk houses. The overall layout is mainly composed of three three-entry courtyards, consisting of 6 halls, 12 small halls, 24 patios, 192 rooms, and 360 wooden pillars.


The woodcarving decorations representing the Jiangnan architectural style inside the ancient house are extremely exquisite. All beams, columns, windows, and doors are decorated with woodcarving patterns, including figures, flowers, auspicious birds, or auspicious beasts, which are vivid. Liu Yong, a grand scholar in the Qianlong Dynasty of the Qing Dynasty, had a close relationship with the Wu family and once gave a couplet that reads ‘When learning reaches a certain level, one forgets Can and Ke.


After parting, poems show Yang and He.’, expressing the hope that friends can achieve success in reading and friendship can last forever. The ancient dwelling also preserves precious cultural relics such as a pen holder inscribed by Su Shi, a great poet of the Song Dynasty, and palace lanterns of the Qing Dynasty. It also retains traditional activity items such as cockfighting and glove puppetry performances, passing on the story of an ancient family.
