Cuiyan

Cuiyan is located in the middle of Xiqiao Mountain. It is a funnel-shaped canyon that is narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. In the Qing Dynasty, painters Li Jian and He Danshan often lived in Cuiyan to write poems and paint. There were originally their painting and calligraphy studios and study rooms on the stone wall. Cuiyan is respected as the birthplace of the Lingnan School of Painting. The main scenic spots in the scenic area include Wuye Well, Cuiyan, cliff carvings, Hulu Well, Xieyan Spring, the ruins of Li Erqiao’s study room, Biyun Village, and Osmanthus Garden.

To the west of Biyun Peak, it is a long and narrow valley in the shape of a funnel. The two sides are steep cliffs standing upright, covered by shade, with cold vines swaying and greenery filling the valley. The entrance is called ‘Hanmen’, about twenty meters wide. Inside the valley is open and gradually narrows. It is about eighty meters long. After Hanmen, there are Guyu Valley, Half Moon Spring, craggy cliffs, Baihua Terrace and Longxu Waterfall.

At the bottom of the valley, a swift waterfall flows down to form a small pool. There are two small springs on the pool again. One is strong and the other is gentle. The strong one sprays and the gentle one hangs down slowly, known as yin and yang water. Beside the pool, there is a stepping path that can lead to the Waterfall Listening Tower embedded in the cliff. Beside the tower is Hulu Well, which receives the sweet spring water leaking from the stone crevices.

There is a plank road on the cliff side that can lead to Linglong Path. Climbing up beside the waterfall leads to Biyun Village. There are two stone chambers in the valley, which were the places where Qing Dynasty painters Li Jian and He Danshan lived in seclusion and painted. Li Jian inscribed the four characters ‘Natural Picture’ on the cliff. He Danshan also inscribed a seven-character quatrain on the wall.

There are many cliff inscriptions by people of the Qing Dynasty on the main wall. On the left cliff in the valley, the roots of banyan trees grasp the stones like a net, and there are various exotic flowers. There are shade-loving plants such as begonia grandis, Semiaquilegia adoxoides, Selaginella uncinata, and Selaginella doederleinii. The place is full of poetic and picturesque beauty with lush flowers and trees and continuous spring songs.
