Da Yi Mountain Scenic Area is a national 4A-level scenic spot, known as the ‘First Divine Mountain’ in the Huaibei plains. Da Yi Mountain, a branch of Mount Tai, originated in the Archean eon and has a history of 2 billion years, named after the Shang Dynasty’s Prime Minister Yi Yin who lived in seclusion here. Located more than 30 kilometers south of Lianyungang city, Da Yi Mountain consists of 12 peaks, with the main peak, Yizu Peak, reaching an elevation of 226.7 meters. The mountain is part of the exposed Archean and Proterozoic strata, which are very ancient, featuring many peculiar rocks and caves, as well as historically significant stone coffin groups and rock paintings. The majority of climbers are local people, and there are outdoor teams exploring the thousand-year-old historical sites. Da Yi Mountain has two main entrances, the South Gate and the East Gate, with the South Gate being the primary access for tourists arriving by car due to its proximity to Guanyun Express Station. The Shifo Temple outside the South Gate is free of charge, originally built during the Yuan Dynasty, but what is visible today is a modern reconstruction. The temple’s highlight is the open-air golden seated Buddha behind the Mahavira Hall. Climbing the steps to the base of the Buddha, one can look up to see the base and the Buddha both standing at 33 meters tall, exuding a grand presence. There is a mountain path leading to Da Yi Mountain behind Shifo Temple. Although Da Yi Mountain is not high in altitude, the numerous peaks and the continuous ascent and descent can be tiring. During the climb, one can observe peculiar rocks such as Beauty Stone, Crocodile Stone, Eagle Beak Stone, Frog Stone, and Sphinx Stone. There is a site of the ancient Shifo Temple on the mountain, but the new construction on the site is not as resplendent as the Shifo Temple below. Upon reaching the summit, one can enjoy a cool breeze and overlook the entire Guanyun County. Da Yi Mountain has many deep and mysterious caves, where fully equipped outdoor teams can explore, and ordinary tourists can also experience the thrill by visiting the safer Pan Si Cave, located between the ancient Shifo Temple site and the summit. Remember to bring a flashlight when exploring caves. After entering Pan Si Cave and walking for a while, you will encounter a T-junction; regardless of the direction you take, exiting the cave will lead to a dead end. After enjoying the view, you can exit Pan Si Cave through the original entrance. The Da Yi Mountain Stone Coffin Tomb Site is a Neolithic tomb burial, with square stone coffin remains scattered across an open plain. Walking north along Yi Road from the East Gate of Da Yi Mountain will lead you to the Stone Coffin Tomb Site. If you do not recognize the way, ask the locals, as the site’s gate is often closed. However, if you insist on seeing it, inquire further with the locals, as they might have ways to show you. Various rock paintings such as the Beauty Stone Rock Painting, Elk Stone Rock Painting, and the Star Sign Stone, reflecting ancient people’s understanding of astronomy, are scattered throughout the scenic area. Opening hours are from 08:00 to 17:00 all year round. For preferential policies, please refer to additional information provided by the scenic area on the day of your visit.
