The dam of Xinfengjiang Reservoir is 6 kilometers away from Heyuan urban area. It is a concrete structure with a height of 124 meters, a top width of 5 meters and a length of 440 meters. It is the world’s first ultra-100-meter-high concrete dam that has withstood a magnitude 6 earthquake. The spillway section has three openings.
From July 11 to 14, 1997 and from August 9 to 16, the dam opened the sluice gates and discharged floodwaters twice. When discharging floodwaters, the lake water rushes out from the gates. Accompanied by a thunderous roar, it rolls up thousands of piles of snow, resembling a picture of a dragon making a fuss in the sea. It is very spectacular. The dam of Xinfengjiang Power Plant is a miracle in the early stage of socialist construction and a model for humans to transform nature and seek benefits while avoiding harms. If one is not on the scene in person, it is hard to imagine that behind such a 100-meter dam is a’mountain ocean’, while at the foot there is a medium-sized city with numerous tall buildings and a bustling crowd.
