Danfu Courtyard is located in Xiahu Scenic Area of Yanfeng Mountain in Linxi Town, Chaozhou. It is an open collection courtyard proposed by Mr. Guo Fengyuan, a famous overseas Chinese leader of Chaozhou origin in Thailand, and constructed with donations from many outstanding people at home and abroad. The entrance is a towering large stone memorial archway, a three-gate hip-roofed building with a height of 16 meters.

It is magnificent and majestic. In the middle is inscribed ‘Essence of Eastern Guangdong’. On both sides are written ‘Golden Sound’ and ‘Jade Vibration’, which are all calligraphy works by Mr. Rao Zongyi, a master of Chinese studies. From the archway to the main hall is a three-entry stone staircase. In the courtyard, flower beds are surrounded by stone-carved auspicious animals such as unicorns, green lions, coiled dragons and iron oxen.

The majestic and magnificent main hall building has double eaves and overhanging pavilions, glazed flying tiles, and four rose-red granite pillars, which are stable and solemn. The three flowing gold characters ‘Danfu Courtyard’ on the central plaque were written by Pu Jie, the younger brother of the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty. The wooden couplet hanging outside the door, ‘Looking afar at clouds and climbing high for a broad view’, was inscribed by Zhao Puchu, the late president of the China Buddhist Association and a famous calligrapher.

The hall contains representative cultural relics of various schools of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. When visiting Danfu Courtyard, what attracts tourists most is the ‘Forest of Steles of Chinese Calligraphy in Past Dynasties’ on the long corridors on both sides of the main hall. Here are gathered the authentic calligraphy works of calligraphy masters from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties to the contemporary era.

In an instant, one can enjoy the calligraphy of five thousand years; by taking a few steps, one can see the treasures of the four seas, which are extremely precious. On the square above the stele corridor stands the Jiaotai Hall, which is the main collection and exhibition hall of Danfu Courtyard. ‘Jiaotai’ has the same name as the treasure seal hall in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Both are taken from the meaning of ‘Heaven and Earth in Harmony’ in the Book of Changes, but here it also has the meaning of cultural exchanges between China and Thailand.

Inside the hall are a set of golden Buddhas, ‘Maha Mongkhon Buddha Statue’, bestowed by the Thai king and representative cultural relics of Chinese culture. On the west side is Yanfeng Academy, with inscriptions by famous people such as Huang Miaozi and Rao Zongyi. This lecture hall from time to time holds lectures and trainings on Chinese culture. It can also be used for distinguished guests to stay.

Returning from the city to nature, from prosperity to tranquility, one can enjoy the quiet beauty of beautiful mountains and clear waters. Surrounded by a hundred-fruit orchard, rare flowers and trees, flying bridges and flowing water, green grass and precious tripods, and Chaoshan tea snacks, it is a Chinese cultural spiritual home integrating culture and leisure.
