Daning River Ancient Plank Road Ruins

On the cliff on the west bank of Longmen Gorge, there are countless even and square stone holes arranged in sequence. This is the relic of the ancient plank road of Daning River. The stone holes of the plank road are mostly square, with a side length of 20 centimeters and a depth of about 30 centimeters. The upper and lower holes are staggered into an inverted ‘pin’ shape. The two holes in the upper row insert wooden stakes and lay wooden boards. The lower hole inserts wooden posts to obliquely support the wooden boards, forming a triangular support frame, thus building a ‘plank road’ for people and livestock to walk on. The ancient plank road takes Daning River as the main trunk and extends from the mouth of Longmen Gorge through Wuxi County to Zhenping County in Shaanxi Province, Xixian County in Hubei Province, and Chengkou County in Chongqing. The total length of the Daning River plank road is about more than 400 kilometers. Its length exceeds the famous Jiange plank road and is second to none among the ancient plank road relics in China.
