Danmen Mountain Island is an uninhabited small island located southeast of Xiangshan County, Ningbo City. On November 8, 2011, it became the first uninhabited island in China with a clear right of use.
The island is located near the central waters of the Xiangshan Peninsula and faces Danmen Village across the water. Danmen Mountain Island has five peaks. When the sun rises in the east, the sun’s shadow and the island’s shadow reflect in the water, forming the character ‘Dan,’ hence the name Danmen Mountain Island.
The island is 1.82 kilometers long and 0.52 kilometers wide, covering an area of approximately 1 square kilometer. The vegetation on the island is primarily grassland, with a few sparse coniferous forests. It also features the rare Danxia landform, which is not commonly seen throughout the country.
In the newly opened tourist routes to Xiangshan, there is a circular island tour, and Danmen Mountain is one of the stops. In the 1960s and 1970s, shepherds lived on the island and made a living by herding sheep. To this day, there are wild sheep on the island available for hunting. The island has essential facilities for tourists, such as hotels and restaurants, and there are also dedicated island management personnel.
The island is surrounded by dense reefs, with clusters of sea snails and a beautiful red sandy beach. You can take a yacht from Songlan Mountain or hire a local fishing boat from Danmen Dongdan Village to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery of the island. The opening hours are subject to the actual operating status on the day.
