The Daoyun Tower is located in Nanlian Village, Sanrao Town, Raoping County. Built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, it is the largest Hakka tulou found in China so far and has a history of more than 400 years. On the central gate tower, there are three big characters ‘Daoyun Tower’. The Daoyun Tower is commonly known as the big building. It is octagonal in shape, facing north and sitting south. It has a circumference of 328 meters, a height of 11.5 meters, and a wall thickness of 1.6 meters. The total area is about 10,000 square meters. The roof of the building is all tiled. Bamboo nails are used instead of iron nails for the solid barrels. So far, no beam or quilt has been damaged by moths. There are only two layers of blue bricks padded on the ground for the wall foundation. The wall is rammed with loess and is still intact. The corridors on both sides of the main building are connected by arches. There are eight lanes left relatively at the corners of the octagonal main building, forming eight rows of surrounding houses that surround the building. In general, the inside and outside of the building together form the layout of the Eight Diagrams. The houses in the building are divided into three entrances, with a total depth of 28 meters. The front and middle entrances are bungalows. After the middle entrance, a patio is left. Although the house is deep, the light is sufficient. The back entrance is a three-story high building. There are 56 main rooms in the whole building, and another 16 corner rooms. The core area of the building is a square paved with pebbles and filled with loess. There is a north-facing hall in the south. There are two public wells on both sides in front of the hall. Another 30 wells are located under the boundary wall between the main room and the main room. Each room gets half of them and can absorb water. In addition to gun holes and embrasures around the building, there is also a hidden water injection culvert on the top of the building gate specially designed to prevent fire from burning the gate. The whole building has eight prevention functions of preventing military chaos, rural fights, fires, cold and heat, and earthquakes. The Daoyun Tower is different from the Hakka surrounding houses in southern Jiangxi and northwestern Fujian, which mostly have a square or rectangular plane layout. It is representative with octagonal shape.
