Dawa Village, nestled deep within the Taihang Mountain range in She County, is a hidden treasure. Located in the eastern part of GengLe Town, She County, Dawa Village covers an area of 25 square kilometers and is home to 117 households with a population of 328.
Due to the geographical environment, the village has limited land area, and farmers have to build their houses on the hillside, following the natural contours of the mountains. The primary building material is locally sourced stone from the mountains, used to construct paths, embankments, and houses, much like building blocks, creating a ‘stone kingdom’ reminiscent of a fairy tale. Over 60% of the stone houses in the village are well-preserved, with only a few having been renovated or rebuilt.
In the scorching heat of summer, stepping into any farmhouse feels incredibly cool, more comfortable than air conditioning, earning the village the title of a summer retreat. Alongside the ancient stone houses, there are many traditional agricultural tools from the 1940s to 1950s, such as stone mills, stone rollers, and stone mortars, which together with the stone houses, exude a simple and traditional rural atmosphere.
