Deshengmen – Ancient City Gate and Transportation Hub in Beijing

Deshengmen, an ancient city gate name, has appeared in various cities such as Beijing, Nanchang, Shenyang, Jilin, and Hefei. The Deshengmen in Beijing was first constructed in the second year of the Ming Dynasty’s Zhengtong era (1437). It is one of the nine gates of the inner city of Beijing during the Ming and Qing dynasties, comprising a complex of military defense structures including a city tower, arrow tower, sluice tower, and a moat city. It has been an important transportation hub in Beijing since ancient times.

Deshengmen marks the starting point of the Beijing-Tibet Expressway (G6, formerly known as the Badaling Expressway), connecting the northern part of Beijing. Due to the nearby subway vehicle factory, Jishuitan Subway Station became the first large subway interchange station to open in Beijing.
