Diao Yu Cheng, the ancient battlefield site, is located 5 kilometers east of Hechuan City along the Jialing River, covering an area of 2.5 square kilometers.
There is a legendary history associated with Diao Yu Cheng: in July 1259, the Mongol army marched against the Song Dynasty in three separate routes. The Great Khan, Mongke, was severely injured by the cannon fire during the fierce resistance of the Diao Yu Cheng’s military and civilians, and later died at the Beiquan Hot Spring Temple. After Mongke’s death, internal strife for the throne within the Mongol army weakened their forces, both in the attack on the Southern Song Dynasty and in their expansion towards Europe. This event extended the rule of the Southern Song Dynasty and altered the global landscape. Consequently, Diao Yu Cheng is acclaimed by historians worldwide as the place ‘where God broke the whip’.

The ancient battlefield site of Diao Yu Cheng remains well-preserved to this day. The main attractions include the city gates, city walls, imperial palaces, military government offices, infantry camps, and naval docks. There are also famous historical sites such as Diao Yu Terrace, Hu Guo Temple, Xuan Fo Temple, Thousand Buddha Grottoes, Huang Cave, Tian Quan Cave, and Fei Yan Cave, along with numerous poems, inscriptions, and relief carvings left by the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.
