The world-renowned Ming Tombs, located at the southern foot of Tianshou Mountain in Changping District, Beijing, began with the construction of Changling in May of the seventh year of the Yongle era (1409 AD) and ended with the burial of the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Chongzhen, in Siling. Over more than 230 years, 13 magnificent imperial tombs, 7 concubine tombs, and 1 eunuch tomb were successively built here. A total of 13 emperors, 23 empresses, 2 crown princes, and more than 30 concubines and eunuchs were buried, making it the most complete and emperor-buried tomb complex in the world today. The Ming Tombs are grand in architecture, complete in system, and have a long history, possessing high historical and cultural value.

The Dingling Tomb, the mausoleum of Emperor Wanli, has a layout that symbolizes the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of ’round sky and square earth’, with a front square and a rear circular shape. The construction of Dingling began before Emperor Wanli’s death, starting in the twelfth year of the Wanli era (1584 AD), taking 6 years to complete, and costing eight million taels of silver. The emperor was only 28 years old when the tomb was completed, and it was not officially put into use until 1620, idling for 30 years. Dingling is one of the three tombs in the Ming Tombs.
