Ditan Park

Ditan Park was the place where emperors in the Ming and Qing dynasties offered sacrifices to the ‘God of Earth’. There are many ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties in the park. There are also sacrificial places and item displays. Visitors can come here to learn about the sacrificial process. In addition, Ditan Park has a beautiful environment. From October to November every year, the ginkgo leaves in the park are so dense that they block out the sun, making it very suitable for photography.

Beijing’s Ditan is corresponding to the Temple of Heaven. Because the ancients had the sayings of ‘south is heaven and north is earth’ and ‘heaven is round and earth is square’, the Temple of Heaven is built on the south side and Ditan is built on the north side. The buildings in the Temple of Heaven are all round, while the buildings in Ditan are all square. This is also a major feature of Ditan Park.

Visitors can pay attention to it. Ditan Park is about 600 meters long and wide. There are entrances on all four sides: east, west, south, and north. Tourists can walk and stroll after entering. Generally, it is advisable to play for two hours.

Huangqi Room: If entering from the south gate, visitors will first come to the Huangqi Room in Ditan Park. Here, the God of Earth is enshrined. There are also shrines for the Five Sacred Mountains, Five Towns, Four Seas, Four Rivers, and Wuling Mountains. It is the main building in Ditan Park. In addition to many cultural relics, this is also a cultural relic exhibition room. Inside, there are many sacrificial items such as chime bells, stone chimes, and drums on display. Visitors can learn about the sacrificial items and process here.

Fangze Altar: Behind the Huangqi Room is the core of Ditan Park – the Fangze Altar. The Earth Altar is also called Fangze Altar and is the main place for emperors to offer sacrifices. The entire altar is square and is the second largest altar among the five major altars in Beijing (Temple of Heaven, Ditan, Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon, and Xiannong Altar). There are also bronze tripods and stone tripods symbolizing the Five Sacred Mountains and Five Towns on the altar. Visitors can take a brief look.

Visit ancient buildings of Ming and Qing dynasties: After visiting the Fangze Altar and continuing forward, it is the second courtyard of Ditan. There are ancient buildings such as the Fast Palace and the bell tower here. The Fast Palace was once the place where the emperor lived when he came here to offer sacrifices. Therefore, the environment of this courtyard is also relatively beautiful. There are many trees in the courtyard. There are small garden landscapes such as the Rose Garden and the Health Garden. There are lakes and rockeries. Flowers will bloom in spring and summer. The environment is very beautiful. There are also exquisite archways and other buildings on the west side of the courtyard. Visitors can visit or take photos.

Children’s amusement park: After passing the second courtyard is the third courtyard near the north gate. The focus here is the children’s amusement park on the east side. There are simple children’s amusement items such as carousels and Flying Tiger Rangers. You can bring children to play here. Each item costs about 10 to 15 yuan.

Autumn ginkgo viewing spot: From late October to early November every year, the ginkgo avenue in the park is a hot spot for Beijing people to photograph yellow leaves. The ginkgo avenue in Ditan Park is the oldest ginkgo road in Beijing. Some of the ginkgo trees were planted when the altar was built in the Ming Dynasty. Every time when the leaves turn yellow, it is golden everywhere and very beautiful.
The Ginkgo Avenue is located on the north side of the park. After entering from the north gate, you can see it.

The Spring Festival temple fair is very lively. During the Spring Festival, there will be a grand temple fair activity in Ditan Park. At that time, the park will be very lively. There are many stalls selling traditional items and snack stalls, all bustling. On the altar, there will also be a ground sacrifice performance imitating the Qing Dynasty, showing the grand occasion of the emperor’s sacrifice ceremony. In addition, there are also ethnic customs performances, band performances, cross-talk and folk art performances from various regions, all of which are very wonderful. You can come and play. For specific time arrangements, you can call for consultation.
