Dongdao Island is located in the eastern part of the Xisha Islands, within the Xuande Archipelago, approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Yongxing Island. The island is rectangular, surrounded by sandbars, with a low-lying central area. It covers an area of 1.7 square kilometers. Composed of uplifted reefs and coral shell sand bodies, the island is elongated, measuring about 2400 meters in length and 1000 meters in width, with a land area of 1.7 square kilometers. The average elevation of the entire island is only 4-5 meters, with higher points on the sandbars reaching approximately 8.5 meters, and the sandbars are up to 60 meters wide. At the southern end of the island, there is a protruding sand spit composed of coarse sand extending over the reef, and two new sandbars are present on the reef flat to the north of the island. Dongdao Island is part of a large, arc-shaped reef flat that protrudes to the northeast. It serves as the northeastern wing of the Dongdao Atoll, which is well-preserved. In contrast, the southwestern part of the atoll, where the coral reefs have not grown close to the water surface, remains as submerged reef banks, such as Kanghan Bank and Binmei Bank. The island houses a nature reserve at the southernmost tip of China, home to over 40 species of birds, earning it the nickname ‘Bird Island.’ The white tern is a second-class protected animal in the country. Dongdao Island is lush with vegetation and boasts a small freshwater lagoon on its southeast side. Additionally, the island is covered with southern tree species such as the wind-resistant Tong and Yangjiao trees, creating an excellent natural environment that attracts a multitude of seabirds. Approximately 60,000 seabirds inhabit the island, with about 100,000 white terns and egrets, golden eagles, sea cranes, and over 40 other species breeding and living there year-round.
